Welcome to the Woodrow Wilson Swimming and Diving Informational Page
UPDATED February 2nd, 2020
CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON, and it's not over yet! We have 12 people going to State Competition on February 14th. Below are pieces of information that are hopefully helpful regarding off season and equipment check in. Please read the entire post.
First and foremost THANK YOU!
Thank you all for your support this season! We could not compete at this level without you.
Special thanks to Lanier Herrera for putting together such great food options for the kids and to all the parents that contributed healthy food for each meet.
Thank you to all the families that opened up their homes for our pasta meals before the big meets. The kids always had so much fun and it created team bonding memories that will last forever.
Mandy Allen worked so hard on putting together timers for each meet, we couldn't do it without you and also all the parents that timed and cheered us on from the deck, we are grateful.
Thank you Becky Daniel for organizing such a successful Swimathon and always keeping everything organized and put together and for representing us so well with Booster Club. Without you kids wouldn't have all the great team items and the much needed equipment.
Coach Marshall and I are so grateful for each and every one of the swimmers and each and every parent. At Welcome to Woodrow new families commented on how friendly and gracious the swimmers were and how well our program runs. That is because of all of you!
OFF-SEASON INFO
For swimmers that have completed their competition season, we will take an extended break until Spring Break is over March 23rd and will then schedule practices no more than twice a week depending on pool availability.
Below are some options for you to consider between now and March 23rd.
1. Woodrow has a Water Polo team that competes with Bryan Adams. It is considered a club team and is coached by Jonas Veazy. They compete on weekends and practice during the week. Since Whiterock Pool is down, they will most likely be practicing at Alamo.
It's a fun way to stay in the water during off-season. Edwins Herrera has additional information, please have your swimmer contact him if they are interested in being on the team.
It is not sponsored by the school and Coach Marshall and Coach Varner will not attend practices.
Water Polo will officially be a UIL Sport in the next couple of years and this is a good way to see if you enjoy the team competition aspect of swimming.
2. Dallas/DISD Aquatics Programs will continue their free swim sessions at various DISD Pools in the evenings. They specialize in stroke work and also offer life guard training for summer positions.
Call 214-587-2868 for more information and current pool locations or visit their website at https://dallasaquatics.org/176/DPARDDISD-Swim-Training-Program
3. Track and Field - Many swimmers have found that joining track is a fun way to stay active and get in some good workouts while continuing to compete. Coach Wilson is the girls Head Coach and Coach Freeman is the boys Head Coach. THEY WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN! Practices are after school on the track.
4. Join a Club Team - as coaches we cannot recommend a specific team. If you are interested in this option please ask one of your team mates. Most teams have year-round practices and offer various levels.
IMPORTANT EQUIPMENT INFO
All swim equipment will be collected March 11th, 12th or 13th. You will have three days to choose from. Equipment will be brought to Coach Varner's room between 8:00 and 8:30 am.
All items should be clean, in good condition and folded in YOUR bag.
If a Booster item is not returned you will be required to pay Booster for the amount of the lost item. For DISD items not returned the school will hold your report card until all items are returned.
Items include:
1. Parka - Must be returned to Booster - turn in number assigned to you - $100
2. Suit - Paid for by Booster (if you would like to purchase your suit please see Becky Daniel) $52
3. White "Woodrow Swimming" comfort color shirt - Paid for by Booster (if you would like to purchase your shirt please see Becky Daniel)
UIL states that Booster shall not buy athletes items that could be considered gifts and these two items fall under that rule.
4. Woodrow Wilson sweats (red or black) - DISD item
5. Black "Woodrow Swimming" long sleeved shirt - DISD item
6. Red short-sleeve practice shirt - DISD Item
7. Red warm up, jacket and pants - DISD Item
8. Black WWW Swim Bag - DISD Item - turn in number assigned to you
You keep the purchased black "W" sweats and black team t-shirt.
This gives you plenty of time to locate all items. If for some reason you are missing an item or you do not have the number assigned to you, ask your team mates for help or let Coach Varner know in advance. You will be responsible for returning the item numbers that were assigned to you.

UPDATED January 6th, 2020
- We will have a team meeting tomorrow (January 7th) during practice regarding District line ups.
- Lineups are due Wednesday at noon and we need to make sure our strategy is not revealed to the public before other teams have finalized their entries.
Entries are based off of:
1. your swimmer's individual times in specific events
2. other team's individual times
3. the number of swimmers that we have
4. the best lineup for our team to score points
5. which individual event will help your swimmer advance to the next level
It is a very difficult task because we must put together a line up that benefits the TEAM and also the individuals. Please know a lot of time and thought goes into the lineup and it works like a tower, if you take out one of the pieces, the whole thing can collapse.
District is different than other meets - we are limited to four people per individual event and one relay per event. Some people are only swimming one event, which means they will be able to focus on getting to Regionals and State in that event. This is not unusual for Districts/Regionals. We have unlimited entries during the year, but with Championship Season we are limited.
- If you have any questions please email Coach Varner and Coach Marshall. We can answer any questions you may have about your swimmer.
- We also need timers for the District Meet. This is your last chance to sign up, if you haven't had a chance to time!
Please use the link below to get signed up:
https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0a4aaeaa2aab9-timers1
- There will be a team pasta dinner on January 16th at the Burgard's. Look for information on Remind as we get closer to that date.
Rest and a healthy diet are extremely important during this time. The next update you will get from us will be over how to help your swimmer during taper and Regional information.
In the mean time please email Coach Varner - [email protected] and Coach Marshall - [email protected] if you have any questions.
UPDATED November 18th, 2019

We do not need timers for this meet.
- Plan on practice Monday and Tuesday mornings for next week. We will keep you updated as we get details. If you will be out of town, a work out will be sent as a Google Form so that you can track your accomplishments.

This where we put in the work for District, Regionals and STATE!

Please review the following attendance requirements from the handbook. These are required in order to remain in good standing with the team. We understand if you are ill and cannot get in the water, but you must notify us. If we are not notified it is an unexcused absence.
Guidelines and expectations Please review the following occurrences. As a member of this program, you are expected to adhere to the guidelines listed below:
- In the event of an injury:
- The athlete will see David, the trainer, as soon as possible
- The athlete will undergo necessary treatment.
- The athlete must obtain a Doctor or Trainers’ clearance needed before returning to practice
- If able, the athlete will attend meets with the team until they are able to return to practice
- If illness occurs remember “If you’re well enough to come to school, you’re well enough to come to practice.” To be excused from practice for illness you must have a note from your parent or doctor.
- Attendance: 90% attendance is required by all swimmers. This means that swimmer can have one unexcused absence in a two-week period. Swimmers may not have more than two unexcused absences in a row. If the attendance policies are not met, a swimmer will not participate in upcoming meets and team activities.
- For an absence to be excused, the swimmer must notify the coach the night before 10pm. A note from the parent, teacher, or coach of another sport must be emailed to the coach or handed to the coach by the swimmer. Text messages will be accepted in times of emergencies.
- Makeup practices: Make up practices will occur once a week. Times and locations will be scheduled with the coaches.
- Late to practice: The door to the pool will be shut and locked at 6:05 am. If you do not arrive by that time, you will not be allowed in to practice. This will be considered an unexcused absence. This is for safety purposes as well as a team attendance expectation.
- If you experience an emergency that will delay your arrival, it must be communicated to the coach via text by 6:00 am
- Dismissal: Every student must stay in the pool until 7:30 every morning. All swimmers must stay to help on the pool deck until all lane ropes and swim equipment is put away.
- The only exceptions will be for students that participate in band, cheerleading, or zero period. These students may get out at 7:15 upon dismissal of the coach.
- Anyone that will be leaving early is expected to put lane ropes and equipment out and should arrive at 5:55 am to do so.
- We will travel to the meets as a team. Everyone is expected to ride the bus to every meet.
- You may ride home with your parents after the meet if there is a family emergency or issue picking you up at the school, however you cannot leave until the end of the meet. Once the meet is over your parent must sign you out with one of the Head Coaches.

We will post the final meet schedule September 5th, we are waiting on a few important dates to be decided.
Updated August 17th, 2019 - Welcome Back!
Please be mindful this year that we have had some changes within our athletic department and team. Even though they are VERY GOOD changes, there will be some areas that will be impacted and expectations may need to shift. Keep an open mind and ask for clarification when needed.
When you have a question, please contact both Coach Varner and Coach Marshall. Emails are located under the contact tab as well as the Remind sign up.
PE Credit Clarification - due to feedback we will be meeting at 8:15 on August 19th. Students that are receiving PE credit must meet three requirements:
1. Complete the form required by the District
2. Make the team and meet time requirements - Swim is not an alternative to PE, it is a competitive team that you must try-out for, not everyone is guaranteed a spot.
Time trials will be held September 24th and 25th, if you do not make the team you will not receive credit.
3. Miss no more than 8 practices
